He enlisted in 84th Indiana as a Private on 14 Aug 1862. He was 21 years old and his occupation was lawyer. He was promoted to the 84th regimental position of Quartermaster Sergeant. He was discharged from the 84th to accept a commission in the 109th US Colored Infantry.
