She was born on July 16, 1922 in Belle Plaine to Harold and Bertha (Westphal) Brenke. She married Herbert J. Balk on December 2, 1939 at St. Anne’s Church Rectory in LeSueur. She worked for the LeSueur and St. Peter Creameries for over 22 years and then worked for Green Giant and Pillsbury for 11 years, retiring in 1995. After retiring she worked at the Seed House for 5 winters. Volunteering at the snack bar at the Minnesota Valley Health Center, delivering Meals on Wheels and helping at St. Anne’s school for school and funeral lunches kept her active for many years.
She is survived by her son, Herbert Balk, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Alexandria;
Four grandchildren, Teresa (Robert) Smith of Hudson, WI, Anthony (Terese) Balk of Minnetrista, MN, Thomas (Rebecca) Balk of Prior Lake, MN and Timothy (Carrie) Balk of Lonsdale, MN and five great-grandchildren, Caitlin, Lauren, Tanner, Nolan and Garrett and siblings, Kenneth (Annette) Brenke of LeSueur and Jean (Fred) Luskey of Ripon, WI as well as nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herbert Balk in 1966; 2 brothers, Melvin in 1988 and Arnold in 1996, two sisters, Bernice Mediger in 2000 and Adeline Maeder in 2006 and 3 nephews.
