Winona Maxine Keen, 85, Mecca, passed away May 19, 2017 3:45 a.m. at Union Hospital Clinton. Born October 20, 1931 in Blanford, she was the daughter of Russell Hoke and Viola Haughee Hoke Akers.
She married Lewis Loyd Keen on June 15, 1948 in Parke County; he preceded her in death in January 2010.
She worked as a nurse’s aide at Vermillion County Hospital for 20 years and was also a published poet. She sold her poetry at the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival. She attended Mecca High School and was a member of the Mecca Christian Church.
Winona is survived by 1 daughter, Brenda and Phil Riley; 3 sons, Michael and Bronwyn Keen, Timothy and Tammie Keen and David Keen; 8 grandchildren, Harolyn Clark, Chad Eup, Alan Fellows, Emily Bonebrake, Nathan Keen, Joshua Keen, Ryan Keen and Ashley Watts; and 14 Great-grandchildren, Christian, Conner, Kaleb, Sammy, Madison, Gage, Jacob, Makayla, Randy, Garrett, Brandon, Caylin, Johnathon and Brielle. Also surviving are 2 sisters, Betty Keen and Sherry and Buck Doan and many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Viola; step-father Jess Akers, daughter Marta Deal, and 2 sisters, Beverly Rennick and Patty Bennett.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 22, 2017 7:00 p.m. at Barnes and Rice Funeral Home, 111 East High Street, Rockville, with Reverend Tim Guoli officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Greene Township.
