Joel's life as handed down in family oral history . Joel had married a woman in North Carolina and they had two girls before the wife became ill . She must have been ill for some time as Joel spent all of his money on trying to cure her . After her death Joel and his daughters came to Mecklenburg Va to live . It was here that he met his second wife Silvany Glasscock . Tradition has it that she came from an honest hard working family . When Joel's family heard that he had married a Glasscock ,they were upset and said that he had disgraced the family . Well as if he did not already have enough trouble with his own relations ;into the picture comes the grandparents of his two daughters who took the daughters back to North Carolina never to be seen again. They said that as he had not married a woman of their choice was the reason. Joels daughters were adult when they went back to North Carolina Elizabeth Chandler born 1830 N.C. and Nancy Chandler born 1831 N.C.
Truth be told and history can show it ,he was a fine man and Silvany was a good woman . That their children turned out to be very fine people ; my great grandfather Joseph Alfred Chandler being the first son and war hero and down to earth family man. This was a close relationship with the Glasscocks that would become even closer in the Overby line.
It pays to follow your feelings and not the will of others who have their own hidden agenders . I myself say he married a better class of human being . As shown by the 1850 census the two daughters by first wife were grown when taken home .
JOEL AND SYLVANY CHANDLER HAD FIVE CHILDREN ,THEY ARE LISTED ON SYLVANYS SITE . REMEMBER THAT SYLVANY RAISED ALL THE CHILDREN FROM 1860 FORWARD ON HER OWN ,STRONG WOMAN , UNCLE DANIEL JOELS BROTHER AND JOSEPH SERVED TOGETHER IN THE CIVIL WAR AND LATER TAUGHT JOSEPH TO BE A CARPENTER .
