Stephen Stewart was born in Missouri to Joseph G. and Margaret Stewart. He married Josephine Boyd and had a large family. They left Missouri and moved to Kansas to stay only a short time before they heard of the opening of the Oklahoma Territories offering 160 acres of free land. They then packed up and moved down into Oklahoma and Steve participated in the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. The Land run was a very big part of the history of the state of Oklahoma. Participants signed up and early on the morning of April 22, 1889 they waited at the starting lines for the firing of the pistol to start the race. Steve, it is said, took his fastest horse to make the run. He staked his claim and homesteaded in Cleveland County and they lived there for a few years before moving to Lincoln County where he and Josie lived until their deaths. They are buried in Kellerby Cemetery close to Arlington and Prague, Oklahoma.
