US Congressman. He graduated from Princeton College in 1789 and was a Professor there until 1794. He then studied law and became an attorney in Huntington. He served in the New York Assembly from 1795 to 1799. He then relocated to Johnstown, New York, where he was involved in land speculation. He then returned to Huntington, and was Suffolk County District Attorney from 1818 to 1821. In 1818 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Federalist. Wood was reelected four times, the last as an Adams Republican following the demise of the Federalist Party, and served from 1819 to 1829. After running unsuccessfully for reelection in 1828 he returned to practicing law in Huntington. Wood was also an amateur historian and authored "A Sketch of the First Settlement of the Several Towns of Long Island" and "A Sketch of the Geography of the Town of Huntington." Silas Wood School in Huntington is named for him
