Adnell Owen (Ad) Acers died on Saturday, May 20 at age 89 of complications from Parkinson's disease. He was born 11-24-1927 in Oklahoma City to Colonel Adnell O., Sr. and Audria (French) Acers. He was a graduate of Classen High School, Oklahoma City University, and University of Oklahoma, with postgraduate work at OU and UCO in Guidance & Counseling and School Administration. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Symphonia and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternities. Ad married Mary Lou Freeman on 5-28-1954. He served with the 45th Infantry Division in the Korean War and was awarded a Bronze Star. After the war he served as an instrumental music teacher, counselor, and administrator in the Oklahoma City Public Schools, Casady School, and in the Oklahoma State Department of Education, from which he retired. He was an early innovator with computers in the 1960's when little software was available for schools, in the areas of interactive master schedule generation, test scoring and analysis, media materials access, textbook distribution, pupil attendance accounting, and many others. He was also active in wood carving, teaching clarinet, genealogy, and Friday School at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, and was a longtime active member of United Methodist Church of the Servant. Ad was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary Lou, by his parents, and by his brothers Bob and Tom. He is survived by his three children and their families: Kent and his children Mia, Jesse, Sharon, and Travis; Tammy and her son Nick; Kevin and his wife Lee; great-grandchildren Chelsea, Aidan, Ezra, Liam, Aspen, and Natalie; by a brother, Bill, and his wife Beverly; and by many genealogical "cousins" across the nation and the world with whom he made contact over several decades regarding the Acers/French/Freeman family histories. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24, 2017 from 4-8 p.m. at Guardian Funeral Home West Chapel in Warr Acres. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at United Methodist Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City at 1:00 p.m.
