Married to Margaret Heron on August 17, 1869 in Perth. He was in the 93rd Regiment of the Scottish Highlanders, stationed at the Perth Barracks at that time.

It is thought that he marched alongside Queen Victoria's carriage when she traveled to Balmoral Castle for the summer.

John was later stationed in Dundee, Scotland at the barracks with responsibility for the Balmoral Castle area.

He came to the U.S. in 1886 and eventually settled in Lock Haven, PA. Margaret and three children followed in 1889.

The family later moved to Johnsonburg, Elk County, PA. Eventually (around 1920) John and Margaret moved to Buffalo and lived with their son John (aka Jack).
