Roman Catholic Cardinal. Venetian born Giuseppe Luigi Trevisanto studied philosophy and theology at the Patriarchal Seminary of Venice which had then just reopened adjacent to the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. While still studying theology, he was asked by his superiors to teach grammar to the students of the fourth year of humanities due to the scarcity of teachers at the seminary and once ordained priest on March 13, 1824 by Msgr. Giovanni Ladislao Pyrker, went on for several years to teach at both the named seminary as well as at the Imperial School of Santa Caterina. Canon theologian of its cathedral chapter, prosynodal examiner, ecclesiastical censor and president of the Academy of Moral Theology San Maurizio, elected bishop of Verona on March 15, 1852, he was named to the metropolitan see of Udine on September 27 that year, receiving his episcopal consecration on January 16 of the following year inside the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella in Rome from Cardinal Fabio Maria Asquini. Named assistant at the Pontifical Throne on May 23, 1854, he was promoted to the patriarchate of Venice on April 7, 1862. Pope Pius IX created him cardinal priest in the consistory of March 16, 1863 with the title of Ss. Nereo ed Achilleo. Member of the Sacred Congregations of the Council, Ceremonial, Index and Indulgences and Sacred Relics, he participated in the First Vatican Council and assisted in any way he could Italian patriots incarcerated by Austrian troops. A noted Orientalist who spoke nineteen Oriental and ancient languages, the Cardinal passed away in his native Venice and was laid to rest in the public cemetery of San Michele, after his request to be buried in the local cathedral next to his predecessors was denied by civil authorities. Years later, in November 1957, thanks to the initiative of Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, future Pope Saint John XXIII, his wish was eventually granted when his remains were transferred to the crypt of the metropolitan and patriarchal cathedral of San Marco.
