Dr. Philip C. Pope's father was Nathaniel Pope V (1761-1809) who was a lawyer and served in the cavalry during the Revolution. He is mentioned in William Wirt's preface to his Life of Patrick Henry. He was killed in a duel. The Virginia Legislature was in session at the time of his death and being informed of what had occurred promptly passed the first anti-dueling law the Commonwealth had known. He married in 1784, Mary "Polly" DuVal (1762-1849), daughter of Samuel (1713-84) and Lucy Claiborne DuVal (1725-1810), of Henrico County, Va. Their ten children were William Duval (1786-); Dr. Philip C. (c1788-); Alexander (dria?) (1790-1808); Catherine Elizabeth (1793-1849); Charles Fox (1794-1864); Mary (c1798-1867); John; Philadelphia (c1800-67); Thomas H. (1801-65); and Ann Pope who married William Price, registrar of the Virginia Land Office.
Charles Fox Pope (1794-1864) was an attorney and farmer in Goochland County, Va. and married in 1825, Lavinia Beckwith Payne, daughter of Col. Mathew Mountjoy (1784/7-1862) and Lucy H. Payne (1777/83-1857). Her father served in the Army, 1856-61. Their daughters were Laura M. (c1828-) who married a Mr. Martin; Elizabeth Howard (1830-1905); and Mary Lavinia Pope (c1833-38).
Catherine Elizabeth Pope (1793-1849) married in 1809, Thomas Calthorpe Howard (1787-1834), son of William and Anne Chisman Howard (1755-), of York County, Va. He was clerk of the Hustings Court in Richmond and later clerk of the circuit court of Henrico County, Va. Their fifteen children were Nathaniel Pope (1810-70); Dr. William Henry (1811-80); Ann (1813); Charles (1814-54); Thomas Chisman (1816-73); Edward Calthorpe (1817-85); Rev. John (1819-57) who was a Presbyterian minister in the Winchester, Va. Presbytery and married Ann Tate (1821-96)(dsp); Philip Francis (1823-86); Mary Delia (1823-24); Dr. Marion (1825-80); Catherine Elizabeth (1826-32); Robert (1828-88); Ellen (1830-91); Maj. Conway Robinson (1832-95); and Lewis Pendleton Howard (1834-35).
