Roman Catholic Cardinal. Shenandoah born Francis John Brennan entered Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Philadelphia, later furthering his studies in Rome at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum S. Apollinare and the Pontifical Roman Seminary. Ordained priest there in April 1920, back in the United States he was appointed to the teaching staff of the named St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, later serving as official of the archdiocesan curia of Philadelphia. Named auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota on August 1, 1940, eventually becoming its dean on December 14, 1959, appointed archbishop of the titular see of Tubune di Mauritania, he received his episcopal consecration on June 25, 1967 at the church of Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino of Rome from Cardinal Eugène Tisserant. The following day, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal deacon, with Brennan receiving the deaconry of Sant'Eustachio three days later. Appointed prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments on January 15, 1968, flying back home from Rome in June that year, he was immediately admitted at Misericordia Hospital of Philadelphia, where he passed away of a heart attack on the following July 2. His body was laid to rest in the crypt of the cathedral basilica of Philadelphia following the celebration of a funeral mass by Cardinal John Joseph Krol on Friday, July 5, 1968.
