Sarah "Sallie" T Kirby was the daughter of Meades Anderson Kirby and Sarah "Sallie" C (Word) Kirby, born in about 1834 in Halifax County, Virginia. She married Thomas J Dunn on 27 Sep 1852 in Halifax County, Virginia.

The couple had at least six children (five sons and one daughter) whose names appear in the U.S. Federal Census records. Their names and approximate years of birth are: William Thomas Dunn, born about 1853; George R Dunn, born about 1854; Louis G Dunn, born about 1856; Sallie A Dunn, born about 1858; Samuel J Dunn, born about 1861; and Joseph L Dunn, born about 1862.

Sarah became a war widow, when Thomas, a Confederate Private, was captured and succumbed to pneumonia while a prisoner of war, dying 11 September, 1864.

She continued to run their farm with the help of her children, and appears in the 1870 and 1880 Census in Halifax County. In 1888, Sarah applied for pension as a result of her husband's death, affirming her residence in Halifax County, Virginia. After that, there are no records in which Sarah appears.

It may be assumed that Sarah died sometime between 1888 and 1900, in Halifax County, Virginia. Thus the date of 1895 is being used as the mid mark in that range. It is unknown at this time where her remains were buried.
