The son of James H. Brown and Nancy Chase Ray. He was educated in the public schools and at Colby Academy. At the age of 18, he was employed at C.H. Martin & Co, wholesale druggists, becoming a partner in 1878. In 1875, he married Sarah Lavinia Andrews, and they raised a son and a daughter. A Democrat in a strongly Republican district, he was elected to the state legislature in 1881 where he served one term. He was a member of the First Baptist church. He died at home of an apparent heart attack.
