He was a happy man, always wearing a smile. Michael Joe Carrillo, 44, grew up in Kansas City, Mo., but had lived in many places since, serving in both the military and the federal government. He was devoted to his work, his family and his country. After spending four years in the Navy, Carrillo enlisted and served four more years in the Army. That was before settling into a career he enjoyed with the Federal Highway Administration. Carrillo and his three teen-age children had lived in Oklahoma City for the last two years, building a life together after losing a loving wife and mother two years ago after an unsuccessful kidney transplant. His family always teased him about being the "Fifth Beatle" because of his love for the British rock group.

Michael Joe Carrillo, 44, of OKC; father of Amber, Michael Joe Jr., and James; preceded in death by his wife Cynthia Applegate Carrillo in February of 1994, Federal Highway Division, Dept of Transportation. Raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Michael Carrillo joined the Navy in 1970 after high school graduation, serving during the Vietnam War era. After his 4-year tour of duty, he signed with the Army for another 4 years.
He met his wife, Cindy, at a naval yard in Philadelphia. After Michael left the service, the two returned to Kansas City, where mike went to work for the Department of Transportation. DOT took the couple to Topeka, Kansas; Ames, Iowa; and Raleigh, North Carolina; they relocated to OKC in the early 1990s. Cindy passed away shortly after then settled in Oklahoma. The couple lost their 6 month old son, Michael James in 1980.
One of 8 children, Michael Carrillo spent his free time drawing and woodcarving. "He would carve eagles out of wood," said is sister-in-law, Connie Carrillo. "It was his favorite pastime." She remembers her brother-in-law as friendly, jolly looking, and happy-go-lucky. "He had a perpetual grin," said Connie.
