Daughter of Henry Palmer and Mary, wife of James Ballance, who was born on January 15, 1861 in Bellary, Karnataka, Madras, India, the son of James Ballance and Elizabeth Bridget, both of Dublin, Ireland, whom she married in 1886 in Dublin, Ireland, and mother of William Henry George, Sidney Ernest, Emma A. (married Frank Buesser Jr.) and Percy Palmer Ballance (married Florence Midford Duff).

Marriage - On August 19, 1886, James Ballance, of full age, bachelor, a soldier, of Chapelizod, Dublin North, Ireland, the son of James Ballance, a soldier, married Emma A. Palmer, of full age, spinster, of Chapelizod, Dublin North, Ireland, the daughter of Henry Palmer, a soldier, at the Parish Church of Chapelizod, Dublin North, Ireland, according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of Ireland, by license, by me, A.J. Hardcourt, D.D., in the presence of George Batson and Elizabeth Palmer.

On June 11, 1894, her husband, James Ballance, stated that he was residing at 399 Highland Avenue, Malden, Massachusetts, occupation surveyor, born in Madras India, on the 15th of January, 1861, aged 35, and that he had arrived in the U.S. at Boston, Mass., on the 21st of June, 1891, when he petitioned for citizenship at the U.S. Circuit Court of Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1895, James Ballance, draughtsman, working at 25 Old Court House, Boston, Massachusetts, was residing at Malden.

Obituary - Balance - Emma Alice, May 13, 1902, aged 38 years, 9 months, dearly beloved wife of James Ballance, C.E., Topographical Bureau, The Bronx, New York City, and daughter of the late Henry Palmer, Treasurer Government Survey Department, Ireland. She was a devoted wife, a kind mother, and dear friend.

Death Record - Emma A. Ballance, aged 39, married, of 2645 8th Avenue, Bronx, NY, born 1863 in England, the daughter of Henry Palmer and Mary Palmer, both of England, died on May 13, 1902 in the Bronx, NY, and was buried on May 14, 1902 at Fresh Pond, L.I.

(Note: After her death, later that year,her husband was appointed to topographical draughtsman. He sailed to Barbados with his daughter, Emma Ballance, aged 20, aboard the S.S. Trent, at the age of 51, occupation Civil Engineer, and could be found on a passenger manifest in 1913 travelling to Barbados with his wife, Emma Norville, aged 32, both with the home address of 225 W. 99th Street, New York, NY, aboard the S.S. Clement. In 1915, James Ballance, Civil Engineer with the U.S. Engineering Office, and his wife, Emma could be found living at 420 Pierce, in San Francisco, California. He gave several lectures on "Brazil and Its Jungles" and could be found in 1917 working as a draftsman in the Engineering Department and living at 601 W. 137th Street, New York City, NY. That same year, his son, Percy P. Ballance, a bookkeeper, lived at 1316 Morris Avenue, New York, NY, and Sidney Ballance, a surveyor, lived at 750 Melrose Avenue, New York, NY. In 1919, he gave a lecture on the jungles of Brazil, just having returned from a trip through the tropics of South America. In 1933, James Ballance, civil engineer, was shown living at 280 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts. In 1938, Boston, Mass, James Ballance, civil engineer, 131 Pembroke, and in 1939, he was shown, civil engineer, still in Boston, living at 72 Clarendon.)
