Officer Allan L. Nairn was a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC.

Circumstance:
While on duty and operating a departmental vehicle, Detective Nairn was driving west on D Street. A vehicle, stolen from Richmond, Virginia, and being operated by 18 year old David Darby of 1011 7th Street NW, was being chased by unit from the First District. At the Capitol Hill intersection of Delaware and D Streets, the stolen vehicle rear ended Detective Nairn's vehicle after having skidded 174 feet before impact.

Detective Nairn was thrown from his auto and landed against a light pole, receiving head and torso injuries. Detective Nairn died at the Washington Hospital Center.

Mr. Darby later pled guilty to manslaughter in the death of Detective Nairn, and received a sentence from Judge Oliver Gasch of the US District Court. Mr. Darby later escaped from Lorton prison, in Fairfax County Virginia.

Detective Nairn was survived by his wife, Gloria of their home at 5826 Bryn Mawr College Park Maryland. He was the son of Perry A. and Isabella Nairn and the brother of Dorothy Manders.

Chambers Funeral Home at 5801 Cleveland Avenue Riverdale, Maryland provided their services and the funeral was held at the Little Church of Fort Lincoln, on Thursday, December 4, 1969.
