Jackie Ray Howe was born on December 27, 1937, at 311 West Hunt Street in Paragould, Arkansas. He was the son of Ray Howe and Isabella Acton Howe, and the grandson of Virgil and Nina Acton and Enos and Cynthia Carolyn Fowler Howe. He passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at St. Bernard’s Medical Center.
Jack was a life-long resident of Paragould. He retired from the transportation division of Emerson Electric and then began working with Meals on Wheels, work that he said was “the best job of his life”.
Jack was a collector of many things, but the main thing he collected along his path in life was people. He loved his classmates from the PHS class of 1955. He loved the people he met while traveling and playing tournament Scrabble, as a member of the Greene County Master Gardeners, and as a member of the Northeast Arkansas Herb Society. He was especially proud to be a charter member of the Northeast Arkansas Master Naturalists and loved to be in the parks with his newest set of friends. He had a special relationship with many of the staff members of the various parks and treasured the time that he spent with them.
Jack loved art, music, and theatre. He just loved to drive, and he was always willing to drive anyone to any place at any time. His favorite title was that of “driver and traveling companion”.
He had a very special relationship with his son and his wife, with his brothers-in-law, his sisters-in-law, and with all of their children and grandchildren. He always encouraged the children to continue their education and to strive to be the best that they could be.
He worked to establish a scholarship fund for the PHS class of 1955. He valued education and wanted to ensure that anyone who wanted to attend college had the opportunity to do so.
Jack is survived by his wife and traveling companion of 37 years, Patty Sue Camp of the home; his son, Jackie Ray Howe, Jr. and his wife Florence of Vero Beach, Florida; his brother-in law, Rodney Camp (Sara) and his children of Harrison, Arkansas; his sisters-in-law, Wanda Camp of Jonesboro and Marcia Heavrin of Jacksonville and their children and grandchildren. He is survived also by a very special “non-biological child”, Brian Osborn of Paragould and his family, and many other special friends from his “collection”.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and his brother-in-law, Kenneth R. Camp of Jonesboro.
Funeral service will be Friday, June 2, at 1:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Kemuel Camp officiating. Visitation will be Thursday evening, June 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Greene County Memorial Gardens.
