Lydia Bentz, 89, of 64 Charlene Street and Parkview Convalescent Care, passed away Feb. 3, 1999.
Lydia was born Jan. 31, 1910, in Hoffnungsthal (Valley of Hope) Gleuckstal District, South Russia, the daughter of Christian and Katharina (Herrmann) Lapp. With her parents she arrived by ship at Ellis Island, N.Y., March 16, 1911. The family traveled from New York to Bowdle, S.D., and then to Marshall, N.D., to farm.
On Oct. 15, 1930, Lydia married Edwin Anton Halter in McIntosh, S.D. They moved to Montana and worked on farms and in the coal mines. Edwin passed away Dec. 23, 1945. In 1947 Lydia married August Bentz in Billings. August passed away Jan. 11, 1974.
Lydia was a homemaker and kitchen helper working at the Dude Rancher Lodge and the Rimrock Lodge. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, embroidering, listening to music and watching TV. She very much loved her flowers and her cats.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walter, Oswald, Edward; sisters, Bertha, Martha and Alma; daughter, Irene (Halter) Barney; stepdaughter, Helen (Bentz) Schaefer; stepsons, Emil Bentz and Reinhold Bentz.
Survivors include daughters, Violet (Halter) Freier (Richard), and June Nancy Bentz (Carl Big Man); son, August Bentz Jr. (Patsy); stepdaughter, Nora (Bentz) Debus (Herman); and stepsons, Reuben (Kathy) Bentz, Herbert (Ruby) Bentz, and John (Germainne) Sengar. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Smith's Funeral Chapel West at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, Reverend Johan Rockstad officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Smith's Funeral Home in charge. If desired, donations can be made to the charity of one's choice. Reception at Smith's following services.
