James S Harris was born the son of a Cracker Baker and very successful businessman. He took up the industry for a time, but after his father's untimely death, he used his fortune to buy a seat at the Stock Exchange as a Broker. He lead a luxurious lifestyle which included a yacht. After a sudden downturn, he lost the yacht and other property and reinvented himself. He was a warehouse real estate broker in NYC and was once again successful.

James married twice. First, he married Emma Allen Courter and they had five children before Emma's untimely death after childbirth: Nina Harris-Kenney, Fred Dwight Harris, Elizabeth Fay Harris, Emma Allen Courter Harris, and James Samuel Harris Jr.

James' second marriage was to Harriet B Davenport. They had two daughters together: Roberta VD Harris and Harriet BD Harris-McCall.
