Frederick Harvey Stephens, affectionately known as "Bubby", was born on July 6, 1937 in Lake Charles, Louisiana and passed away May 30, 2017 at age 79, at his home in Westlake. Mr. Stephens lived in Lake Charles until he was seven when his family moved to Westlake, where he graduated from Westlake High School in 1955.
He lived the remainder of his life in Westlake and began his career at Firestone when he was 18 years old, retiring after 44 years of service.
Mr. Stephens was an active member of Westlake First Baptist Church and his Sunday School class. He was an annual participant in the Baptist Men's golf tournament and previously bowled with Westwood Baptist Church. Bubby was an avid fisherman, golfer and duck hunter. He built several homes including his son's and loved woodworking, especially projects using black walnut. Favorite pastimes were antique shopping with his wife, reading, gardening, traveling, bringing his grandchildren on annual vacations around the country, and listening to the Gaithers music, but more than anything playing fast-pitch softball in the position of pitcher until finally retiring his glove at age 68. He was a huge supporter of his son and his grandchildren's school, church and sports activities. He had a list of favorite songs he loved to teach his grandchildren, some of which were sung at his homegoing service. He was also an animated storyteller. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and will be dearly missed.
Bubby is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ava "Ann" Davis Stephens; son, James Harvey Stephens and wife, Ellen of Sulphur, four grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Billy Stephens and wife, Courtney of New Braunfels, Texas, Ethan Stephens and wife, Jaclyn, Mary Ellen Stephens, and Christine "Chrissy" Stephens, all of Sulphur; four great-grandchildren; and his brother, Dr. Edward Stephens of Calico Rock, Arkansas. He is preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Marietta Knight Stephens Baukman; his sister, Zella M. Duncan; and his oldest brother, Jimmie C. Stephens.
His funeral was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 1, in First Baptist Church of Westlake. The Rev. Johnny Johnson officiated. Burial was held at Westlake Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Pallbearers were James, Billy, Ethan, and Ed Stephens, Ronnie Thomas and Frank Snyder. Honorary pallbearers were Ken Anderson, Gary Denney, and Oliver McGuire.
