Noel O. Mintz died at home east of Emporia on June 1, 2017 at the age of 84. Noel Oren Mintz the son of Oren and Bonnie (LaMaster) Mintz was born December 19, 1932 in Rochester, Michigan. He moved with his parents in 1936 to Hallowell, Kansas where he grew up. He graduated from Columbus High School and attended Pittsburg State University where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Industrial Arts Education. He married Shelba Gean Warford August 23, 1954 in Faulkner, Kansas.

Noel touched the lives of many students. His long teaching career began at the Garden City and Dodge City Kansas high schools and community colleges where he taught Automotive classes. After 10 years of teaching in western Kansas, they moved to Emporia in 1964 where for 37 years he was a professor at Emporia State University. During that time he Chaired the Industrial Arts department, led the Driver’s Education Instructor program, earned his Doctorate at the University of Missouri in 1973, and served in the College of Education where he was the Director of Admissions to Teacher Education. He retired in 2001.

In addition to his professorial duties, Noel was a life-long teacher and leader in various local Christian congregations where his skills as an instructor will continue to reap eternal benefits. His passion to follow Jesus Christ grew throughout his lifetime and was his defining characteristic. You rarely went anywhere in east-central Kansas with Noel that you didn’t run into someone who was a former student of his.

Noel loved his family and friends. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren…and would tell you about it! Noel passed on his passion for hunting and fishing to both his grandsons, and his love for sports to all of his grandchildren. After all his kids and grandkids moved far away he “adopted” many other local players and teams as his own and followed them enthusiastically. Noel was also a fixture for many years at the Emporia Farmers Market and was well known for his excellent produce.

He was an Elder at Central Christian Church in Madison, Kansas; a member and former chapter president of the Epsilon Pi Tau Honorary Professional Industrial Arts Fraternity; and a former Board of Directors member of the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Donna Mintz of Merritt Island, Florida; his brother and sister-in-law Merle and Rose Marie Mintz of Derby Kansas; his sister, Lorice Haraughty of Oswego, Kansas; his sister Coreen Lillich of Wichita, Kansas; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Julie Mintz of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his son and daughter-in-law Don and Connie Mintz of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gean Mintz on May 11, 2000. Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. The service will be conducted by his sons, David and Donald Mintz. The family will receive friends the hour before the service. A memorial has been established to Chinese Christian Mission, contributions sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801.
