A native of Rome and Floyd County, Mrs. Cook was born on May 12, 1929, the daughter of the late John McKinley Salmon and Ruth Bell Allen Salmon. She was a member of the West Rome Baptist Church and attended the Antioch Baptist Church in Texas Valley. Mrs. Cook was an avid Gospel Music fan, attending singings and concerts at every chance and was a huge Georgia Bulldogs fan. She enjoyed doing volunteer work for several various agencies in Rome and Floyd County and received the "Volunteer of the Year" award from the BellSouth Pioneers. Mrs. Cook also enjoyed her yard work, visiting others and reading her Singing News magazine. She was a devoted servant of Christ and her favorite time was spent sharing time with God and reading her Bible. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard C. Mayfield, Jr., on June 2, 1983, to whom she was married on August 14, 1946, and her second husband, James Lee Cook, on April 18, 1993, to whom she was married on November 22, 1986. A son, Howard Steven Mayfield, preceded her in death on September 25, 1987, along with two brothers, Lidelle Salmon and Raymond Chandler Salmon.
Mrs. Cook is survived by a daughter, Vicki Mayfield Swenson and her husband, Robert P. "Bob" Swenson, DDS, of Marietta, GA; one grandchild, Christopher Robert (Maureen) Swenson of Cape Coral, FL; three great-grandchildren, Robert Patrick Swenson, Matthew Baker Swenson and Kathleen Elizabeth Swenson; four sisters, Opal Palmer Money and Beth Faeber, both of Rome, Billie Ruth (Ward) Edwards of Butler, GA, and Sandra Gail Worsham of Huntington Beach, CA; one brother, James Edward (Betty) Salmon of Fresno, CA. A host of nieces, nephews and other extended family also survive.
