Melissa D. Bates, age 40, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in Dothan, Alabama. Melissa, the beautiful daughter of the late Dave & Barbara Fox, and the loving sister of Christina Nantz, was born in 1976.

Melissa was a graduate of Texas A&M University, where she majored in Paleontology. While in College Station, she met her husband Greg Bates. They were married in their hometown of Houston, Texas on December 20, 2003. Her children, Aiden, age 11, and Isabella, age 7 were her pride and joy. Melissa was a very talented personβ€”she was an amazing seamstress, a wonderful cook, an expert cake baker and decorator, and could make anything grow. Melissa was a loving and selfless person, who volunteered her time and talent to those causes and charities that were most dear to her heart, including the U.S. Army and her children’s schools. Most recently, she designed, sourced, and directed the construction of the learning garden at her children’s elementary school, where she recruited dozens of volunteers from the local Army base to help her make her vision a reality. Thanks to Melissa, hundreds of children will learn the valuable skills of gardening and ecosystem conservation. A survivor of cancer, Melissa was a true friend and comfort to those who were battling cancer themselves. Her beautiful smile and loving, giving spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

Melissa was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Jesse & Patti, and Don & Ruth. She is survived by her nieces Amanda Nantz, Annabel Constance, and Caroline Constance, her nephews Brendan Nantz and James Constance, and her many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Yanda & Son Funeral Home in Yukon, Oklahoma at 9:30 am. A private family burial will follow in Cement, Oklahoma. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Melissa’s name to the charity of your choice.
