Arlie Nordland, 89, of Sioux Falls, formerly of DeSmet, SD. died Sunday, June 11, 2017 at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls.
Arlie Lee Nordland was born August 25, 1927 in Kingsbury County, South Dakota. He grew up in the DeSmet Area where he received his education.
He entered military service and served in the US Army during the Korean War from May of 1951 until receiving his honorable discharge in February of 1953.
On January 19, 1954, he was united in marriage with Opal Stevens in Luverne, MN. The couple lived in the DeSmet area where Arlie farmed for most of his life. He retired from farming in the 1990’s and moved to Sioux Falls in 2008. His wife, Opal preceded him in death on March 9, 2007.
His faith was very important to him. Arlie attended the nearest Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses from wherever he was living. In his younger years, he attended with his wife, Opal, and in later years, he attended with his daughter and son-in-law.
Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Charlene (Tom Sturges ) Nordland-Sturges of Sioux Falls, SD; two grandchildren, Sheila Sturges and Andrea Sturges; and two great grandchildren, Lorinda and Austin. He is also survived by his brother, Glen Nordland of Chester, SD and his sister, Ella Schultz of Windsor, CO.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his half-brothers, Richard Sisson and Clyde (Nordland) Boyle; and his step-sons, William Becker and Jeffrey Becker.
Funeral services will begin 11:00 am Saturday at Miller Funeral Home, Westside Chapel in Sioux Falls. Private interment will be in the DeSmet Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00-7:00 pm Friday at the Miller Westside Chapel.
