He attended Kentucky public schools. He joined the Air Force in 1957 and served until 1961. He joined the the Air Force Reserve later and served from 1961 to 1963. Arvel was no stranger to hard work. He was employed with Crescent Tools for nearly 20 years and served as a general contractor, where he built numerous projects around the community including private residential structures, churches and additions. Arvel also owned a coal mine along with cousin James for nearly 10 years.
He was united in holy matrimony on July 10, 1997, to Darlene Brunson.
Kenny leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Darlene Brunson Hagans; eight daughters, Kenyetta Hagans, Katrina Hagans McKnight, Deneitra Abraham Hagans (Brandon), Jada Nelson Hagans, Monique (Reggie) Primus, Agnes Brunson James, Doretha D. Hagans and Mildred Hagans June; three sons, Aubrey (Allisia) Hagans, Arvel K. (Jane) Hagans Jr. of Texas and Larry D. (Karen) Hagans of Georgia; four adopted children, Areatha Harvin, Francis McDowell, Sean Nathaniel and Audrey Perkins; brothers / sisters, Jessie (Dickie) Hagans, Mildred (Benny) Hagans, Estelle Hagans and Donesoline Hagans; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two grandchildren who were reared in the home, Ayisha and Harry James.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Darriel, Bobby Paris Jr. and Tim Hagans; and sisters, Ophelia Anna and Nina Jane Hagans.
Funeral service: Bethel AME Church, 219 E. Calhoun St., Sumter, with the pastor, the Rev. Davie Brown, officiating, and the Rev. Robert E. Galloway, eulogist.
Interment: Florence National Cemetery, Florence.
