Passed peacefully away in Middleton, on January 4, 2015, at the age of 92. Son of the late Jesse and Minnie Butt and formerly of Western Bay, N.L., Alex moved to St. John's in his late teens to study engineering at Memorial University, then went on to complete his Civil Engineering Degree at Nova Scotia Technical College in 1946. He married a Newfoundlander, Ena Rideout, in 1949 and together went on to raise three children who blessed them with eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Alex was a dedicated employee of Imperial Oil Ltd. for more than 30 years. His work took him to many places, with moves between St. John's and Halifax and a one-year posting to Jamaica in 1969 as 'his fondest memories of his time with Imperial'. Alex was much loved and will be greatly missed by all of his family. He was a loyal Kiwanian and active volunteer and spent many hours with the annual Halifax Kiwanis music festival, including eight years as Director and President. In later years, he volunteered at the IWK children's hospital. Alex was a talented artist; he particularly enjoyed fine woodworking and put much time and effort into creating personal pieces for family and close friends. A fan of classical music and arias with a beautiful tenor voice, he was often called upon to sing for weddings and special events. Newfoundland remained close to his heart and one of his favourite songs was 'Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary's'.
