After a brave and graceful fight with cancer, Hope Baumgarten passed away on November 24th, 2016 at her home of fifty years on Marhill Road in Green Bay, WI.

On July 9, 1944, Louise Hope Overholt was born in Waukesha, WI to parents Louise (Walters) Overholt & Charles Evans Overholt. However, her middle name became her namesake, and for those who had the privilege to know and love her, she brought hope, grace, and kindness to her life and community.

Hope fondly remembered the freedom of summer days as a young girl, riding her bike to the city pool and around town. Her brother, Charles (Chuckie), was her little buddy early in life; born with cerebral palsy, Hope helped care for Chuckie until his early death in 1947 at the age of three. Her brother, Jay Overholt, was born in 1954, and though the two were ten years apart, their spirits made them lifelong friends. They loved sharing time together, especially the ritual of watching CBS's Sunday Morning Program.

Hope graduated from Waukesha South High School in 1962 and went on to attend Mount Mary College for a year as a National Honor Society member. In 1965, she used her talents as a window decorator for Gimble's Department Store, and later taught creative arts at the Northwest Technical Institute in Green Bay.

In 1966, Hope met and married her husband of over fifty years, Richard "Dick" George Baumgarten. Later that year, they moved to Ashwaubenon, where Dick was involved in the founding of Ashwaubenon's first bank. Her quick wit, humor, smile, and sweet disposition kept him charmed throughout their lives together. They shared a love of gardening and travel, deciding after retirement that they would winter in Florida to enjoy warm weather and sun all year long. They spent time on Marco Island before buying a home in Punta Gorda, where they have many close friends.

Their son, Kurt Richard Baumgarten, was born in 1967. His smile brought more joy to her heart than can be described and she loved attending his school and sporting events - especially the Junior Masters Golf tournament. Hope was especially grateful for the many hours Kurt spent driving over the past months between Madison and Green Bay to be with her. She described this time as "the best ever." Their bond was beautiful and special to her, full of mischief, laughter, and love.

Hope's creativity flourished in her use of language and writing. Always humble with regard to her own gifts, her friends still comment on her beautiful Christmas letters and cards, as well as her lovely emails. She was a member of the "Tear Drops" Book Club for over 20 years and was an avid reader. A love of animals was a huge part of Hope's life as well - even adopting a stray cat that wouldn't stay away from the yard; Mr. Tucker became one of the largest and most spoiled animals in the history of kittydom. He even traveled from Green Bay to Florida to winter with his kitty parents!

Throughout her fifty years living on Marhill Road, the "Marhill Ladies" and their families provided enduring and beautiful friendships to Hope. She cherished the days over recent years when the weather permitted her to sit in the sun with her friends, visiting about life, books, relationships, and kids; sharing laughs and catching up.

Family and friends are extremely grateful for the care and comfort so many friends, nurses, and doctors provided for Hope, particularly during the past few years. A special thanks to Brianna and Maria from The Nurse Next Door, and to the Bellin Cancer Center in Ashwaubenon. Her positive outlook and strong spirit kept her with us for much longer than originally anticipated. Her generous, sweet, and loving soul changed all our lives for the better.

Hope is survived by her husband, Dick, brother, Jay, son, Kurt and his partner, Rachael Cooper, sister in law, Connie Kramer, and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Lyndahl Funeral Home (1350 Lombardi Avenue) on Friday, December 2nd, from 4-6 pm. A funeral service will be held at St John's Lutheran Church in Ashwaubenon (2700 Babcock Road), on Saturday, December 3rd at 11 am, preceded by a visitation at 10 am, and immediately followed by a reception and luncheon celebrating Hope's life.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Green Bay Humane Society.
