Florence Beckwith Welles, 86, of Honesdale Borough, died Monday in Regional Hospital of Scranton, after a sudden illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Carl Welles, in 1980.

Born July 28, 1929, in Waymart, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Lena Swingle Beckwith. Florence was a graduate of Waymart High School. She was a member of the Waymart Church, and was also a lifelong member of the former First Baptist Church of Waymart. She attended Sunday services there less than 24 hours before her unexpected death. Florence was also a member of the Waymart American Legion Post 889 Women's Auxiliary. She worked for many years at Katz's Garment Factory, and also at Cozy Corners Personal Care Home in Seelyville.

A diligent worker, Florence was a well-known lady in the community. Although she faced many struggles and hardships in life, she remained a faithful and steadfast woman, who sincerely cared about others. She was loved by many, and will be missed by all.

Surviving Florence are her daughter, Loretta Oakely, of Carbondale; and her son, Carl Welles and wife, Nancy, of Waymart; two daughters-in-law, Susie Carney, of Honesdale; and Betty Ann Welles, of Altoona; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a large extended family.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, Thomas Carney, Lee Carney and David Welles; and an infant grandson, Chad Welles.

Memorial services will be Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Jenkins Funeral Home, Edward Howell, funeral director, 269 Belmont St., Waymart. Pastor Sal Maiorana of the Waymart Church will be officiating.

Friends may visit Friday from 4 until the service at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Clinton Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made in Florence's memory directly to Waymart American Legion Post 889, P.O. Box 395, Waymart, PA 18472.
