Love and family surrounded Gwen D. Hall, of Belpre, Ohio, when she passed from this life on June 3, 2017, at Marietta (Ohio) Memorial Hospital after a battle with cancer. Gwen was 76 years old.

Gwen was born Dec. 15, 1940, to Robert J. and Ruth E. Idelman Dunbar, both of West Virginia in 1914 and 1915 respectively. She graduated from Wellesley High School in Wellesley, Mass., in 1958, and from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1962 with a BS in Biology, during most of which time she served also as a Teaching Assistant. While raising two children and working as a consultant in the medical industry, she also attained the degree of Masters in Education from Georgia State University in 1983. She spent several years teaching at Georgia State before moving full-time into the medical consulting field.

In 1999, Gwen moved to Belpre to take an active role in the care for her parents. She became an active member in church and voluntary service with the Parkersburg Humane Society, and especially furthering her interest in education, becoming a GEMS mentor for several years, encouraging young women to become interested in entrepreneurial activities. She served, too, in the First Presbyterian Church of Parkersburg, choir and liturgy the most prominent. She also serviced candles in memory of her mother through the Ruth I. Dunbar memorial trust. And she steadfastly maintained her responsibilities to clients in the medical community in Atlanta, Ga.

Gwen’s passion for turtles arose from a trip with her sister Ann, and is renowned with both family and friends. She ended each message or letter with a small turtle; it didn’t take long for each Christmas, birthday or some event to pass without several additions to her collection; now to a number of 150 or more. She loved them all. And she was a dedicated fan of UNC basketball: GO HEELS!

Gwen was preceded in passing by her mother, Ruth (Pat to most); father, Robert; and sister, Ann. None of the family will forget her dedication of caring and passion for each of them.

She is succeeded by her children, Michelle of Marietta, Ga.; her son Eric, of Union Springs, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Shelby, Christine and Joshua, all of the Atlanta area; two great-grandchildren, Christian and Evelyn; and her brother, John of Tulsa, Okla.

A memorial service will be held in Belpre, Ohio, at Leavitt Funeral Home on Aug. 5, 2017, at 1 p.m.
