Gustav Wilhelm Rudolph Ristau was born on 2 August 1904, in Marathon, Marathon, Wisconsin, to Rudolph Frederick Ristau and Johanna Maria Magdalene Hoeft. He had two sisters, Emma and Annie; and three brothers Lawrence, Walter, and Rudolph.
He married Mildred Harkner on 28 March 1936, in Gogebic, Michigan. They became the parents of these children: Phylis Ristau, 1937–?; Truman Ristau, 1938–1995; Karen Ristau; and Dennis Ristau, 1940.
He lived in Wisconsin most of his life.
He passed away in November 1967, in Pennsylvania, at the age of 63.
