Johann/Johannes Alois was a son of Wilhelm Ludwig Carl Strauss. He had at least one brother: Carl Friedrich Conrad Strauss, born May 31, 1834.

On September 1873 he got married, aged 28, with Pauline 'Minna' Hofmann, both German and single as well, at the Evangelische Kirche, in Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Germany.

They had three children: Margarete Dorothea Elisabeth, Minna Caroline Auguste, known as Minnie and Christina Carolina Johanna Strauss.

In the year 1890, Johann/es is counted, aged about 44 years, married and orthopedist by occupation, in a census for Mecklenburg-Schwerin, German.

Again in 1900 he is enumerated, aged circa 54 years, married, in a census for the same place as above. He states he still works as a truss-maker and is a lutheran by religion.

He died aged 58 and was buried on October 30, 1903, at the Schwerin Cathedral.
