US Congressman. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War as a Private in the 19th Texas Cavalry regiment. After serving six years in the Texas State Legislature, where he was Speaker of the House, and two years as Texas Lieutenant Governor, he was elected as a Democrat to represent Texas' 7th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1893 to 1897.
