James was one of seven children born to Wm. Hopson & Mary A. Nelson of Kentucky.
During the Civil War James signed up for three tours of duty. He began his service with the Union Army in 1861 and completed his last tour in April 1865 at age 26.

James married Nancy Lawrence (1849-1911) and they had two sons, Edward (1871-1917) and William M. (1868-1940).

Their son Edward was married to Sarah Elizabeth Henderson. They had one son James.

James, his wife Nancy and son Edward are all buried in unmarked graves in Greenwood's Public Burial Site. His son, William had his final place in Riverview Cemetery in Louisiana, MO.
There is a new military headstone for James that was provided by Veterans Affair Memorial Products and will be installed in the spring of 2021 to honor James.

There are three forms found on James B. Nelson in the Missouri Heritage Soldiers Records - War of 1812 - World War 1.

It appears he signed up three times beginning on June 12, 1961, Sept. 2, 1861 and Feb. 26, 1862. He completed his soldering duties on April 14, 1865.
