Mary Elizabeth (Platt) Bean Carter
Mary Carter, of Bellevue, Washington, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2017, peacefully at home. She was 86 years young.
Mary was born November 21, 1930, to Frederick and Alma Platt in Great Falls, Montana. An only child, she grew up during the “Great Depression”, a difficult time for her family. She was raised in several different areas of Montana and always spoke fondly of her home state. In 1945, she moved to Billings, Montana where she met and married Thomas Bean. Tom was one of eight children, so suddenly Mary had the family she had always longed for, and she loved them all as her own blood.
In 1960 Mary and her family moved to Bellevue, Washington, where they became charter members of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. Mary was devoted to her faith, and her love of God guided her throughout her life.
Mary was a stay at home mom until her youngest child was in the 5th grade. She then became the secretary for the guidance counselor at Odle Middle School, where her two youngest children attended. Working at the school gave Mary the freedom to spend time with her family during the summer breaks.
Mary left the school district and became the secretary of C&M Interiors, a business started by her husband Tom, for the next several years. She later went to work at Overlake Medical Center as the admissions secretary in the Emergency Department, where she continued to work until her retirement in 1996.
Mary was awarded “Employer of the Year” from Overlake Hospital in 1984, an honor she always cherished. She was awarded “Outstanding Personal Support” for the regional Multiple Sclerosis Center and also the Overlake Hospital Foundation “Member of the Year” in 2003 for her contributions to the Connections program.
Mary married Eugene Carter in 1989. Gene preceded Mary in death in October 2005. Mary and Gene enjoyed living the retired life with vacations to Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, and traveling around the United States.
Mary is survived by her four children: Sheryl Dunbar (Daniel) of Salem, OR, Mike Bean (Jan) of Bellevue, WA, Diana Jimenez (Chris) of Moses Lake, WA and Ron Bean (Roberta Gregg) of Pomona, CA; her four grandchildren: Christopher Bean (Anne), Kevin Bean (Raelyn), Larissa Bean and Brandi Duffy (Rob); and four great-grandchildren: Karman, Tyler, Makylie and Elaine Bean. She is also survived by three step children: Karen Kenney (Patrick), Peter (Tina Kajimura) and Kimberly Senter (Wayne); five step grandchildren: Travis Kenney (Jamie), Adam Kenney, Aaron Senter (Ashley), Craig Senter (Jill) and Chelsea Robinson (David); and 11 great-grandchildren: Madden, Meghan, Kahne and Jacquelynn Kenney; Ava and Amelia Senter; Graham and Oakley Senter; and Olivia, Brooklyn and Mack Robinson. Mary is also survived by two much loved sister-in laws, Sharon Reinhardt of Wickenburg, AZ and Connie Bean of Fruitland, ID.
A memorial service celebrating Mary’s life will be held on Friday, June 30, at 2:00 p.m., at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church (411 – 156th Ave. NE, Bellevue, WA 98007).
In lieu of flowers memorials contributions may be made to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church (address above) or to Habitat for Humanity (560 Naches Ave. SW Suite #110, Renton, WA 98057).
