Valentin "Val" Ulrich passed away July 14, 2009. He was born on Aug. 5, 1926, to the late Juan Sanchez and Kate (Muetzelfeldt) Ulrich. Surviving are his half-brother, Charles P. Ulrich, and his half-sister, Kate Fear; five children: Karen Hershman, Daniel Ulrich, Norman Ulrich, Walter Ulrich, and Stephanie Reseter; seven grandchildren: Jennifer, Tim, Julia, Briston, Brandon, Carly, and Alyssa; and one great-grandchild. Val and his wife, the late Barbara Ann (Brokaw) Ulrich, were married in New Jersey, and Barbara supported Val while he completed a Ph.D. The couple moved to PA so Val could pursue a teaching career. He taught at WVU for many years, while Barbara managed their home, raised their five children, and assisted in his research. Val, Barbara, and their children often made the drive back to NJ to visit family and friends. Val enjoyed woodworking and was a double Purple Heart recipient.
