HMS Hermes was the first Royal Navy warship designed and built for use as an aircraft carrier. Built by Armstrong's at Elswick, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, it was completed in Jul 1923. In Mar 1942 she joined the Eastern fleet at Trincomalee to join the search for Japanese warships in the Indian Ocean. On 4 Apr 1942 she was detached to take passage to Trincomalee and prepare for Madagascar landings. On 9 Apr 1942, while South of Ceylon, with no aircraft on board, she was attacked by Japanese aircraft and hit by no fewer than forty 250 lb Bombs. 306 of her ship's company lost their lives. The Australian Destroyer HMAS Vampire was also sunk in these attacks.
