Robert was a prominent lawyer, a leading Democrat, and trusted friend of Presidents Pierce and Buchanan. At time of Civil War he was connected with New York and Harlem R.R., and later was its President, at which time the viaducts and tunnels leading to Grand Central Depot in New York City were constructed. He built other roads, and was officer and director in several R.R. corporations.
