Robert C. Hale, 81 business leader, civic volunteer
Robert C. Hale visited the San Diego area in 1948, expecting to return within a year to his Ohio home. Instead, he established roots in El Cajon, where he became a truck dealer, civic volunteer and leader in the business community.

Mr. Hale, who lived in the Horizon Hills area of El Cajon, died of complications from lung cancer Aug. 7 at Grossmont Hospital. He was 81.

"Bob felt the community had been so good to him that he wanted to give something back," said Mary Cole, his companion and caregiver. "When he gave a donation to
the Boys and Girls Club of East County, a gym was named in honor of him and his late wife, Kay.

"Bob didn't want that kind of recognition, but he was always ready, willing and able to do anything for his community. He was a real goer."

The gym, to be named the "Bob and Kay Hale Gymnasium," is near completion in Lakeside. Mr. Hale made his donation to the club in memory of his wife, who died in September 1995.

Earlier, he bought a bus for the Boys and Girls Club, recalled longtime friend Trent Huls.

A recreational pilot, Mr. Hale maintained a Cessna 182 at Gillespie Field until he was 80. He had learned to fly at age 17 at an air college in St. Louis and later earned a degree in engineering from Alfred University in his native New York.

Mr. Hale was an original East County member of the Sheriff's Aero Squadron, flying search and rescue missions, Huls said.

Earlier, during World War II, Mr. Hale applied his aviation savvy as a field engineer for Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical Corp.

Mr. Hale began his East County business career with a service station. He then opened an International Harvester dealership, which he sold in 1973. As president of Hale Enterprises, he expanded into commercial building investments and construction.

He was president in the mid-1960s of the Mother Goose Parade Association and president in 1962 and 1963 of the El Cajon Valley Lions Club. He also was a longtime member and former exalted ruler in the El Cajon Elks Club.

A San Diego Padres season-ticket holder for three decades, Mr. Hale was a charter member of the team's booster club. He also became a founding member of Singing Hills Country Club.

"El Cajon was an awful small place when Bob came here, maybe 7,500 people," Huls remembered. "Bob planted his roots and became a very successful businessman."

He is survived by a sister, Genevieve Anderson, of Falconer, N.Y.

Services were Thursday at El Cajon Mortuary.

Donations are suggested to a charity of choice.
