Wm. Schwartz, Long a Postal Employe, Dies
Military Honors To Be Conferred by the Spanish War Veterans
William Schwartz, veteran of the Spanish-American war and a retired employe of the federal postal service in Hall county, died at 1:30 o'clock this morning at his home, 514 West Seventh street. Mr. Schwartz had been ill for the past eleven weeks and heart trouble was the cause of his death.
Born in Fort Plain, N. Y., Oct. 24, 1864, the departed grew to manhood in his native city, coming to Nebraska and arriving in Grand Island which since had been his home, on March 11, 1887. For some years he was employed by the Union Pacific railroad company, later entering the postal service. After twenty-four years in the postal service he was retired, six years ago.
Mrs. Schwartz, during the Spanish-American war, served as a corporal of Company B, third Nebraska infantry. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and was particularly active in the Odd Fellow's lodge. He was a past noble grand of the local lodge and a past chief of Patriarchs Militant, which he also served as chaplain.
On Oct. 29, 1924, at Council Bluffs, Ia., he was united in marriage to Martha E. Woolery, who survives to mourn his passing. Also surviving are three stepsons, Glen W. Woolery, of Hastings; Burel Woolery, of Lodi, Cal., and Lisle S. Woolery, of San Francisco; five grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Mary Homkey, at Fort Plain N. Y., and three brothers, George and Charles, of Fort Plain, and Fred, of Ilion, N. Y.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock, Friday afternoon at the Geddes funeral home. Rev. Glen Rice, pastor of the Presbyterian church will conduct the services, and military honors and the ritualistic tribute of the I. O. O. F. will be conferred at the grave in Grand Island cemetery.
