Joseph Kirkpatrick

Residence Orange County NC; a 45 year-old Farmer.
Enlisted on 3/11/1862 at Orange County, NC as a Private.
On 3/11/1862 he mustered into "G" Co. NC 3rd Light Artillery
He was transferred out on 11/4/1863
On 11/4/1863 he transferred into "E" Co. NC 13th Battn Light Artillery

POW 4/26/1865 Chatham County, NC (Paroled)

He was born 10-18-1820 to John W. and Anne (Clendenin) Kirkpatrick. He married Sophia Knup (now spelled Canup) Jan 1, 1847. They had 7 children.

Joseph was drafted at age 41 and served as Shell Bearer for heavy artillary at the costal fort below Wilmington, N.C.

He saw severe action and saw his friend next to him get his bead blown off by yankee cannonball. He suffered
emotional scars the rest of his life, constantly scanning the skys looking for cannonballs.

After war he brought his family to Harrisburg IN in 1867. Joseph died 4-17-1895. Buried w/his wife and son Rufus in the West row of graves in the old section of Vinson Cemetery.
