PIONEER MERRILL RESIDENT DIES; FUNERAL MONDAY

Richard (Dick) Howes, Who Settled Here in Early Days of Jenny, Dies Last Evening

Richard (Dick) Howes, 75, a pioneer resident who settled here when Merrill was Jenny and built the first home in his neighborhood, passed away late yesterday in his home at 600 Douglas street following an illness of nearly two weeks.

His death was attributed to double hernia complicated by pneumonia. He was taken ill August 24 when the rupture, which was relieved by an operation about nine years ago, again affected him. Pneumonia developed later and his condition grew steadily weaker until yesterday when he died.

At his bedside when he expired were his daughters, Miss Rose Howes, who was his housekeeper since the death of his wife, Emma Ober Howes, in 1925, and Mrs. Anna Walker, of Antigo, formerly of this city, two grandchildren, Violet and Lester Walker, and the latter's wife and a number of old friends and neighbors.

Built First Dwelling
Mr. Howes, universally accepted, was something of a wit and charmed those who knew him with his greeting or in recalling some event of long ago. He often recalled that when he came here he had to clear his land of stumps before he could build his home on Douglas street and it was the first dwelling in that neighborhood. Indians were his earliest neighbors.

He had been retired for many years.

Mr. Howes was born in Toronto, Canada, on June 16, 1860 of Irish parentage and received his education in schools in that city. The family was lifelong members of the Methodist church. He was united in marriage on August 21, 1888 to the late Emma Ober Howes a few years after coming to this country from the dominion.

Besides his two daughters, Mr. Howes was the father of a son, Ray Howes, who died eight years ago. Other survivors are his brother, Frank Howes, Gleason, and six grandchildren, Lester, Violet, George, Grace, Ray and Betty Walker. A nephew, Fred Howes, lives at Spirit Falls. Two sisters and a brother are deceased. Other relatives are living in Memphis, Tenn., and in Canada.

The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock next Monday afternoon from his home, where his body will lie in state, and at 2:30 o'clock from Scott Memorial Methodist Episcopal church. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Arthur _. Tink, pastor. Interment will be in the Merrill cemetery.
