Charles Wayne Rhyne, 67, was born December 9, 1949 in Muskogee, OK to Charles Edward and Geraldine (Mattingly) Rhyne and passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 at his home in Muskogee. Charlie grew up in Fort Gibson where he attended school graduating with the class of 1967. He continued his education at Bacone College before entering the United States Army in February 1970. Charlie proudly served in Vietnam from July 1970 to October 1970 where he received the Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter and Good Conduct Medal Commendations. Charlie stepped on booby trap in Vietnam and was medically retired receiving an Honorable Discharge on August 2, 1971. Charlie remained active with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, playing golf, pool, quail and pheasant hunting and coached little league and American Legion baseball for many years and was a big part of many lives during that time. Not one to sit still long, Charlie traveled many miles around the Fort Gibson and Muskogee area visiting family and friends. Family was his first priority. He never missed a sporting event, recital or a gathering with family. He was affectionately known as Papa. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, and grandparents. A service celebrating Charlie’s life will be noon, Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Timothy Baptist Church with Reverend Kelly Payne and Reverend Jason Snyder officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery with full military honors.
