Earl Randolph Newcomb, 93, of Bedford, passed away Monday, February 26, 2007 in a local nursing home. He was born October 12, 1913 in Goode, a son of the late Samuel Ralph Newcomb and Annie Wilson Newcomb and the stepson of the late Virgie Lacy Newcomb. In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his faithful and devoted wife of 62 years, Elva Zimmerman Newcomb; a devoted stepdaughter, Nancy Newman and two brothers, William Robert Newcomb and Samuel Ralph Newcomb. He graduated from New London Academy in 1932. After graduating, he worked for two CCC Camps. He joined Company A of The National Guard in the Late 1930's. He serviced as the Mess Sergeant for Company 116th Infantry. He was a D-Day veteran and one of the Bedford Boys. Earl was known for his great cooking and was an avid poker player. He was a member of the Center Point United Methodist Church and the 29th Division Association and was a retired farmer. He is survived by two devoted stepsons and their wives, Garland and Margaret Miller, and Willie and Betty Miller, all of Bedford; 13 stepgrandchildren, one devoted stepgranddaughter, Toni Campbell; numerous stepgreat-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren; one brother and his wife, John and Etta Newcomb, Goode; one sister and her husband, Lucy and Joe Irvine, Lynchburg; one half sister and her husband, Mary and Les Woodie, Altavista; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends, Jim and Ellie Bryant. In memory of Earl, please visit a veteran. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National D-Day Memorial, P.O. Box 77, Bedford, Va. 24523. A funeral service, with military honors by American Legion Post # 16, will be conducted from the graveside at the Greenwood Cemetery on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Steve Parker. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home and the family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. at the graveside. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
