James Copper Bayles was the 4th and youngest child of James and Julia Halsey (Day) Bayles. He married Ianthe Green 21 Oct 1869, and they had two sons and a daughter May Green Bayles, she died young.James Copper Bayles was a Lt. of Artillery in Co G 16 th N.Y. Heavy Artillery Regiment during the War Between The States. From 1870 to 1889 he was Editor of "Iron Age" and the "Metal Worker". During 1884 & 85 he served as Pres. of the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) twice and charter member of the Amer. Society of Mechanical Engineers. During 1887-8 he served as President of the N.Y. City Board of Health. He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. by Rutgers College in 1890.
