Mary E. Winant Benedict was the daughter of Judge Mark E. and Sarah Watts Winant of old pioneer stock, Mrs Benedict was the granddaughter of Peter Winant, of Revolutionary War fame, who as a Colonist was forced to flee from Staten Island on account of strong Anti-Tory sentiments which he so freely expressed. After the war Peter Winant returned and became one of the first members of the NY State Legislature from Richmond County, serving in 1788-1790 and 1791.

She married Read Benedict on April 29, 1856. They were the parents of 1. Ella Frances who married James V. Burkman, 2. Frederick W., 3. Read, 4. Sarah B. who married Louis H. Achilles, 5. Lila who married Harry E. Heal, 6. Read E., 7. Mary E., 8. Cornelius, 9. Charles P. who became president of Benedict Bros. and married Travilla Van Name, 10. Coleman who was also associated with Benedict Bros.
