William Griffiths was known to his family and friends as Bill. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on 26 Jan 1913. His father was William Griffiths Sr (b 1881, d 1946), a bond merchant and real estate agent, and his mother was Clara Dillon (b 1885, d 1955), a housewife and mother of four. He had one older brother, Alfred Lawrence Griffiths (b 1910, d 1956), a US Army Calvary Captain and insurance salesman. He also had two older siblings who died in infancy. Bill grew up in Cleveland and completed high school there. He went on to university to earn his BA, MA and then his PhD in public health. From there, he pursued a career in university teaching and conducting research in the area of public health, first in Minneapolis, Minnesota, then in Berkeley, California, at the University of California. He married Sylvie Redmond (b 1916, d 2006) on 19 Dec 1940 in Manhattan, New York. He was 27. She was 24. They made their home initially in Minnesota, then in El Cerrito, California, in the east bay area of San Francisco Bay. They had four children, two daughters, Clare and Kathy, and two sons, Roland and Mark. Bill, with his wife, Sylvie, traveled extensively to many third world countries to conduct research and provide consultancy services in health education and population planning. After retirement, they continued their global travels and maintained friendships in cities throughout the world. Bill passed away at the age of 85 on 22 Mar 1998 in El Cerrito. He was survived by his wife, four children and numerous grandchildren. His burial details are not documented.
