Monte was a Korean War veteran, serving in the US Army as a Sergeant in Heavy Mortar Company 224th Infantry Regiment. During his military career he was decorated with the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars and Combat Infantry Badge.
