LaVern E. Peck, age 92, of Marshall died Saturday, January 3, 2015 at the Calhoun County Medical Facility in Battle Creek

Mr. Peck was born on November 12, 1922 in Marshall to Glenn Minot and LaVerne (Alexander) Peck. In 1942, LaVern enlisted in the United States Navy. He continued to re-enlist and made the military his career. His service to the country took him and his family all over the United States and world. While serving, he spent time on the USS Cone and the USS Wilson ships. Following his military retirement, he returned to the Marshall and began a new career with the Federal Center in Battle Creek. He retired following 16 years of service there.

On October 23, 1945, he married the former Freda Dowding in Indiana.

LaVern was a devoted Christian and was an active member of the West Eckford Missionary Church. He served on the Church's board and as a Deacon for many years. LaVern could be found at the church almost daily tending to various projects including maintenance of the building. When his children were in their teens, he served as a Youth Sponsor, drove the church bus and taught classes when needed. The church had just honored LaVern giving him the title Deacon Emeritus and had planned on giving him a special clock with his name and title engraved on it. The special ceremony was to be held Sunday, January 4, 2015.

LaVern also loved the outdoors and was drawn to farming. In 1974, he purchased a small farm. While he continued to work at the Federal Center, he became a gentleman farmer. He loved to spend time on the farm, doing chores and just tinkering around and mending things.

He is survived by his wife, Freda; sons, James (Andrea) Peck of Homer and Lawrence (Lori) Peck of Homer; 3 granddaughters, Jackie Peck, Jennifer (Andrew) Thompson and Julie (Doug) Koos; 7 great grandchildren 2 step-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Harold Peck and L.D. Peck; and a sister, Bernadine Taylor.

The family will greet friends on Thursday from 4 PM to 7 PM at the Craig K. Kempf Family Funeral Homes, 723 Old US 27 N., Marshall, Michigan. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of his life will be held 11 AM Friday, January 9, 2015 at the West Eckford Missionary Church with Pastor David Nicholls officiating.

Friends who wish may memorial contributions to the West Eckford Missionary Church. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home.
