He attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering and received the license of certified electric welder, which he applied as an employee of the then Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, laboring on ships which sailed the Great Lakes and later on the famous in-bound built U.S. submarines. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, in which he served from July 1944 to July 1946, receiving his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Center in Illinois, and then assigned to LST 1040, in active duty in the Pacific war theater.
He was the assessor for the town of Newton, and in 1961 became an employee of the city assessor's office in Madison as a real estate appraiser, and retired in 1990 as the commercial appraiser, having attained the senior residential appraiser and certified assessor evaluator designations. On April 12, 1947, he married Irene Eberhardt at First German Evangelical Church, Manitowoc.
She survives along with five children and 15 grandchildren: son, Gerry (Debbie) Kolb, Madison, Miss., and granddaughter, Becky (Bryant) Welch, Irving, Texas; son, Dennis (Janet) Kolb, Oregon, Wis., and grandchildren, Bob Kolb, Kirksville, Mo., Michelle (Chris) Lakner, Madison, and Danielle, Oregon; daughter, Beverly (Karl) Krueger, Mount Horeb, and grandsons, Hans, Kurt, and Apirat, Mount Horeb; daughter, Nancy (Pastor Ellery) Groth, Clear Lake, and grandchildren, Christine, Eau Claire, and Paul, Mark, Rachel, Sarah, and Adam, Clear Lake; daughter, Donna (Michael) Bischoff, Verona, and grandsons, Alex and Aaron, Verona; sisters, Ione (Oliver) Voigt, Manitowoc, and Doris (Paul) Wehausen, Valders; sisters-in-law, Emma (Bill) Roehl, New London, and Esther Halverson, Valders; brothers-in-law, Herman Eberhardt, Manitowoc, Fred (Beatrice) Eberhardt, Manitowoc, and William (Thelma) Eberhardt, Janesville; many cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved grandson, Andrew Bischoff; sister-in-law, Edna (Eberhardt) and her husband, Alvin Fisher; sisters-in-law, Elda (Halverson) Eberhardt, Norma (Reichert) Eberhardt, and Barbara (Fisher) Eberhardt; and brothers-in-law, Herman Halverson and Henry Eberhardt.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at ST. ANDREW'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 6815 Schneider Road, Middleton, with Pastor Randy Hunter officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the services on Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Knollwood Memorial Mausoleum, Manitowoc.
