Col. Paul B. Duruz, retired U.S. Army, age 87, of 1830 S. 18th St., No. 30, Manitowoc, died on Thursday morning, Dec. 20, 2007, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc.

Paul was born on Nov. 24, 1920, in Sacramento, Calif., son of the late Bernard H. and Marie C. (Gastieger) Rogers. He attended Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Ore., and graduated with the class of 1938. Paul then attended Oregon State College and was commissioned as 2nd Lt. Infantry from ROTC at Oregon State College. He served in the 44th Infantry Division during WWII. On Jan. 23, 1946, he married the former Alice Zagrodnik in Manitowoc. In 1947, Paul graduated from Oregon State College with a Bachelor of Science degree. He then attended and graduated from Teachers College in 1957 and later graduated from Columbia University with a Master of Arts degree. In 1949, Paul was integrated into regular Army Military Police and served as provost marshal, U.S.A., in the Southern European Task Force, Italy, and II Field Force, Vietnam. Paul was assistant commandant for the U.S.A. Military Police School and was on the Professional Staff of the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice. Paul retired from the U.S. Army in 1970 as a colonel. Following his military career, Paul was employed as a management consultant for Cresop, McCormick and Paget from 1970 to 1972. He then was appointed administrator of staff and faculty for Montgomery College, Rockville, Md., until his retirement in 1985. Some of the cities that Paul and Alice have called home during his career include: Davis, Calif.; Corvallis, Ore.; Brake and Esslingen, Germany; Albuquerque, N.M.; DeLand, Fla.; Augusta, Ga.; Munich, Germany; Verona, Italy; Washington, D.C.; and Chevy Chase, Md. Paul and his wife Alice then moved to Manitowoc following his retirement, where he served on the Citizens Advisory Committee, and one year as chairman for the senior advisory council, Seniors and Law Enforcement Together. He is a member of the Retired Officers Association; the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the American Legion; Kiwanis in DeLand, Fla., and Rockville, Md.; and as past president of the Golden K of Manitowoc. Paul was also a member of the Fraternal Delta Tau Delta College social fraternity.

Survivors include his wife: Alice Duruz of Manitowoc; three nieces: Marilyn (James) Maples; Geraldine (Robert) Eaton; and Sharon (Norbert) Vogt, all of Manitowoc; one nephew: James (Barbara) Zagrodnik, Sullivan; four grandnephews: Mike (Mary) Maples, Manitowoc; Dr. William (Mary Ellen) Maples, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; Thomas (Lynn) Eaton, Manitowoc; and Kevin (Susan) Vogt, Ph.D., Kansas; six grandnieces: Dianne (Kevin) Hollenbeck, Portage, Mich.; Cynthia (David) Meyer, Manitowoc; Nancy Donahue, Manitowoc; Carla (David) Urbaszewski, Des Plaines, Ill.; Erika (Andy) Heideman, Jefferson; and Heather Schneider, Jefferson. Paul is also survived by many great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews, as well as great-great-grandnieces and great-great-grandnephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Daniel Felton, with entombment to follow at Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum, town of Kossuth. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 88.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand on Saturday Dec. 22, 2007, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 10:30 a.m.

The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
